The Integrated Ticketing Scheme (ITS) is being rolled out in 2011. Private bus and coach operators, also known as Commercial Bus Operators (CBOs), will join the scheme around December.
The scheme is open to transport operators who provide public transport services within the Greater Dublin Area (GDA), or services that begin or terminate in the GDA.
The intention of the scheme is to provide transport users with an easy way to travel into and around Dublin, using Dublin Bus, Irish Rail, Luas, and Bus Éireann services, as well as a range of private transport operators such as coach and bus companies. Therefore, the user will be able to use a single smart card to use the services of several different transport operators. That smart card will be called a Leap Card.
Eligible private coach and bus operators are encouraged to join the scheme. There may be a charge for joining the scheme, although there may be flexibility if an operator joins before the CBO rollout begins. There will be costs per month for the necessary services associated with membership of such a project.
On the other hand, the Railway Procurement Agency (RPA) is in the process of procuring new ticket machines that will be provided free of charge to private coach and bus companies who have already signed up. Those machines are being designed and built by Avego.
Other benefits of joining the Scheme include reduced cash handling costs, access to state-of-the-art backoffice accounts services, and access to a whole new type of commuter and tourist who will switch between transport modes seamlessly.
All private coach and bus companies, members and non-members alike, are represented on the Integrated Ticketing Board by the CTTC. The seat on the Board was occupied by CTTC Chief Executive Gerry Mullins from May 2009 to May 2011. Brendan Crowley of Wexford Bus now represents CBOs at the decision-making table.
